{"id":22,"date":"2008-07-13T18:19:43","date_gmt":"2008-07-13T17:19:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/foodonabudget.com\/content1a\/?p=22"},"modified":"2010-03-31T20:54:40","modified_gmt":"2010-03-31T19:54:40","slug":"roadside-honesty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foodonabudget.com\/content1a\/2008\/07\/roadside-honesty\/","title":{"rendered":"Roadside Honesty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When travelling country roads one often comes across signs attached to gateposts or propped against trees proclaiming &#8220;fresh fruit and veg&#8221; as well as many other delights such as free range eggs and honey.<\/p>\n<p>One such occasion was yesterday, for once a dry and mild Saturday, enabling us to take our dogs <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ablogfrommydog.com\" target=\"_blank\">Buster and Charlie<\/a> for a good long run to stretch their rain weary legs.<\/p>\n<p>A day out by the sea was required and on the way we chose to take the back roads which wind past many small farms and villages.<\/p>\n<p>At this time of year the soft fruit is ripening and sure enough, on a fence was a sign saying &#8220;blackcurrants and raspberries&#8221;. \u00a0Turning off the road onto a narrow farm lane overhung by what promised to be quite a crop of apples later in the year, we came to a small courtyard with a table bearing boxes brimming with ripe, juicy fruits.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/foodonabudget.com\/content1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/dscn5797.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-28\" title=\"dscn5797\" src=\"http:\/\/foodonabudget.com\/content1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/dscn5797-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/foodonabudget.com\/content1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/dscn5797-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/foodonabudget.com\/content1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/dscn5797-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/foodonabudget.com\/content1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/dscn5797-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/foodonabudget.com\/content1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/dscn5797-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/foodonabudget.com\/content1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/dscn5797-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/foodonabudget.com\/content1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/dscn5797-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At only \u00a31.20 for 500g of currants and \u00a30.75p for a box of raspberries, we helped ourselves to the pickings and left the money in the honesty box on the table. I think I got quite a bargain, as most of the large supermarkets charge around \u00a31.00 to \u00a31.79 for 250g of currants.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/foodonabudget.com\/content1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/currants1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-29\" title=\"currants\" src=\"http:\/\/foodonabudget.com\/content1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/currants1-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"punnet of blackcurrants\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The next stop yielded some free range eggs, tomatoes, beetroot and some lovely home made lemon curd.<\/p>\n<p>In fact all of the produce you see on the table below was purchased for just slightly under \u00a310.00.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/foodonabudget.com\/content1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/produce.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-23\" title=\"produce\" src=\"http:\/\/foodonabudget.com\/content1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/produce-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some of the raspberries, we could not resist eating on the way home, but once home we promptly washed and froze the fruit for later use.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When travelling country roads one often comes across signs attached to gateposts or propped against trees proclaiming &#8220;fresh fruit and veg&#8221; as well as many other delights such as free range eggs and honey.
